My computer is really failing on me now gahhh I didn't think I would get it going again:013:

Last night I got home and turned the computer on and nothing happened:dft002: so tried again and still nothing. Now my heart was starting to beat a little faster getting worried as I had not backed up my stuff. I turned the power off at the wall, my brother checked all connections and plugs and all ok, swtiched power on again. I turned the pc on, it's green light came on then it died. It did this quite alot, it just never started. Later I tried again and finally the pc started up, green light on, diskdrive light flashes (normal) and HD was running. Nothing was on the monitor, monitor had power to it so nothing wrong there. Modem, USB Hub lights were not all on either so I knew the HD wasn't loading. I left it going for 20mins then turned it off. I tried turning it on again and it didn't start up at all again, the green HD light came on but it quickly turned off.

Today I tired turning it on again and all I got was a quick start, green light, then it went off. Did the power wall trick again and nothing. I guess it's not the Power Supply, which I thought it might be, but it can't be that since the HD is starting up every so often. It could be the HD struggling to start up, as this is failing I've been told, but again I don't know. I turned the pc on again and this time I got a blue HP logo on the screen and then nothing else so later turned it off.

Well I don't know what happened, but it was good:027: the computer started up straight away, got the HP screen then the windows loading screen..this looked promising. I let it carry on and it finally loaded up and here I am.

I'm backing up stuff as I type this and I'm not going to turn the freakin thing off!! I don't know what's wrong, but will give my tech shop friend a ring and see if she can idenifiy the problem. It's time to get my new computer!!

How clean is it inside Jenn, If the fan on the CPU is clogged up and/or wont spin up the computer will shut down like is happening here, worth checking out.

At a net cafe lol, can you belive it:dft011:

Motherboard is blown, so she would have to replace that along with CPU and DDR RAM. I will be getting a new pc next week. I won't repair the pc at the moment, maybe later as a backup.

I'm Back!!! :048:

Woah what a week or so I've had. My computer was working fine for the day then when I got back home that night, I turned the pc on but nothing happened. It died on me

A day later I found out that the motherboard had blown and would have to replaced along with a new CPU and DDR RAM (my pc is 4yrs old). I decided not to get it fixed.

I had to wait a week before I could get a new computer (money reasons). I had been researching in getting a new computer since August 2007 and was debating over a windows pc or a Apple iMac.

I am now sitting in front of my beautiful iMac:dft009: It's such a nice computer and will take me a little while to get used too.

I ordered it yesterday and it arrived today from Sydney, Australia.

The day after my pc died, my toilet seat attachments sheered in half:dft006: got that fixed. The next day the leg hanger clip sheered off so Invacare have ordered me a new set. I do have a set to use in the mean time.

Good to be back.

jenn - some possibly redundant mac advice - keep your system software close to hand for the first few weeks, and make backups of all your work. on my previous macs (NOT this one, or my dads, both of which are fairly new with the different chips, so it may be completely redundant now) i had to reboot my system after about a week, when it seemed as though i stressed my new computer out too much and it had a nervous breakdown. okay, possibly not the most technical explanation, but it made sense when i thought of my computer patiently waiting for its owner in the store pre-bought, in quiet contemplation, then i buy it and quickly turn it into a gibbering wreck, so i reinstall the system software and give it a stern talking to about its role in my work/sanity, and promise to be nice if its nice to me...

I have two Intel macs running Leopard, and they fly! Never crash, or lock up, non of that M$ winblows crap. But alias I'm stuck using winblows on my Thinkpad, but its XP pro with 2 gigs of ram, so its ok. Good hardware helps.

But Jenns Intel iMac is constructed from the best parts apple can buy. And they run silent! Mac OS X 10.5 kicks booty too!

I'm so happy for you Jenny! :)

Good stuff Jenn, what model did you get?.

I ordered it yesterday and it arrived today from Sydney, Australia.

That was fast, I can't get stuff delivered locally that quick.

You'll have to keep us informed of you progress in the Mac world, BTW how did you overcome the DVD Drive position problem?.

Thanks for the welcome back:)

Yea I was shocked that it arrived the next day. My Dad recieved the order emails and they had actually shipped the iMac the same day I ordered it.

I have the....
iMac, 20-inch, 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Apple Mighty Mouse
SuperDrive 8x (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB
Apple Keyboard + Mac OS X
Apple USB Modem
320GB Serial ATA Drive

iWork 08
AppleCare Protection Plan

I did manage to order it all under Educational as my Dad works at a Uni:)

The DVD Drive is just manageable for me, but I hope I won't need to use it much once I finish setting things up.

Last night I had shut it down as I wanted to see how fast it starts up. The start up is way faster than my HP, it only takes a few seconds to load:)

One thing that I find I will have to get used to is: the menu bar for each program. If I'm using a browser the menu bar is up the top next to the Apple icon, if I click on another program like yahoo messenger or Adium or whatever, the menu bar is still at the top but changes per program you click on. It's the same for the Mail program and here I was trying to find the mail menu bar, when I realised it was at the top.

the other thing that my dad cant get a handle on (he has windoze at work and apple at home) is that when you close the last window the application itself stays open. so you can always tell when hes been using the computer, because half the applications are open, but no windows! its good and bad - but you can set it to close with the last window if you want, but i dont because its more convenient if i accidently drop a window, i dont have to restart the app. also, when i updated safari last time, it started warning me if i quit (i sometimes click option-q, which means quit, instead of option-w, which means close) when i have text entered (no more lost webmail!) or more than 1 tab open. you probably have this, its cool. feels like a safety net for my not-paying-attention-ness...
